Yosemite & the Eastern Sierra

Yosemite & the Eastern Sierra is a small book filled with photographs of, of course, Yosemite and the Eastern Sierra, by Gary Crabbe and interspersed with quotes by famous individuals who have explored the park. Though petite, the book has a ton of truly lovely images. This is another great book for palette inspiration. 

Pros: This is well printed book, and is a nice small size, great for carrying around with you. It has a ton of really great images, and can also be enjoyed for it's quotes. Also, the book can be bought for very cheap, some places for under a dollar!

Shanghai: The Architecture of China's Great Urban Center is an interesting book. Full of contradictions like the city itself, the text of the book talks about a Shanghai that boomed and grew too fast with too little planning. Built during a time when there was much enthusiasm and little ruling, these structures are marvels of architecture with new and edgy innovations, but are usually built in useless places and without much regard given to their neighbors. This book talks about these difficulties in a bitter sweet manor, discussing the traditions of Shanghai architecture, it's influences, and where it will go in the furture. All of these along side some spectacular photos of some of the most curious and beautiful modern architecture in the world.

Exemplifying the Shanghai of today, this traditional building stands juxtaposed to the modern skyscrapers in the background. 

Pros: Hard Cover, good printing, nice quality paper. Interestingly informative about the dynamics of Shanghai in regards to it's architecture, and its architects

Cons: On the slimmer side of art books, but not dramatically so.

BBC: Nature's Great Events

Nature's Great Events, a book made to accompany the BBC documentary by the same name is informative and beautiful. It is a fairly good accompaniment, as is covers a lot more information than the six part series alone. The focus of this book is on seasonal changes, and some of the more spectacular examples of it. This book is a great resource of references, mostly for animals, but also for some environments and color. This book is also not afraid to show a lion killing a zebra, nor the bloody ribs being pulled apart later. The honesty of this book is intense and wonderful. 

Broken into sections like, The Great Flood, The Great Feast, and The Great Migration, the book successfully bops around the globe, giving us a taste of everything.

There are also a few shots of the camera crews struggling. This book allows the crews themselves to write and talk about what the experiences were like, and the particular challenges faced in each location.

Pros: This hard back book is both a great companion piece, and a stand alone book. The photographs are spectacular, and, as I mentioned before, rather daring in regards to what is more commonly printed. If you are looking for a reference book, I would say this is a nice well rounded starter. If you are looking for something informative and full of fun trivia, this is the book for you
